  • Title: Choral Director for Young Men’s Ensemble (Part-time, hourly)

    Reports to: Artistic Director

    Hours: Rehearsals weekly September - June: Tuesdays 7:00PM - 9:00PM, and approximately one Sunday per month 6:00 - 7:30PM. Additional performance calls as needed. This position is available from September 2026.

    ABOUT CHILDREN’S CHORUS OF WASHINGTON:

    Children’s Chorus of Washington (CCW), now in its 30th season, nurtures artistic excellence and empowers young singers by celebrating our shared humanity and the value of every voice. CCW pursues a vision of a chorus that represents the diversity of the Greater Washington community, making its outstanding program accessible to children and youth of all backgrounds. Celebrated as the premier youth chorus in the nation’s capital, our 300+ singers, ranging from ages 6 to 18, regularly perform in DC’s most prestigious venues and tour worldwide.

    JOB SUMMARY AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The Children’s Chorus of Washington (CCW) is seeking a dynamic Choral Director to lead its Young Men’s Ensemble for the 2026-2027 season (September - June). This ensemble, for changed voice singers, meets weekly on Tuesdays in Northwest DC, and once monthly on Sunday evenings. The Director will plan and lead weekly rehearsals, teach healthy vocal technique, and prepare singers for performances. CCW prioritizes student and family relationships, and this Director must foster an inclusive ensemble culture and maintain strong communication with families. Other responsibilities include selecting developmentally appropriate, diverse repertoire and collaborating with the Artistic Director, accompanists, and staff to ensure a cohesive and enriching musical experience. This part-time position requires specialized expertise in male vocal pedagogy, repertoire selection, and advanced ensemble training within a demanding educational environment.

    OVERVIEW:

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Lead weekly rehearsals and musicianship training, using effective and inspiring teaching methods.

    • Collaborate with the ensemble pianist to deliver well-planned, cohesive instruction.

    • Select diverse, age-appropriate repertoire that supports vocal development and musical growth.

    • Prepare choristers for performances. Approximately six performances throughout the year.

    • Work with the Artistic Director and staff to plan performances and integrate the ensemble into larger organizational programming, including collaborations with treble voices for an SATB ensemble.

    • Provide mid-year and year-end evaluations for choristers.

    • Serve as a public representative and advocate for the ensemble, recruiting changed voice singers to the chorus.

    • Maintain strong working relationships with administrative staff and other faculty/directors.

    • Foster a positive, inclusive ensemble culture and maintain strong relationships with singers and families.

    • Communicate regularly with the Artistic Director and staff regarding rehearsal needs and student concerns.

    • Attend staff meetings, auditions, promotion assessments, tours, retreats, and intensives as needed.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Required:

    • At least three years of choral conducting experience with high-school aged singers, with at least a BA degree in music or similar area.

    • Demonstrate excellent musicianship and artistry as a conductor and educator.

    • Passion for music education and a commitment to nurturing the artistic growth of changing voices

    • Knowledge of male vocal pedagogy, youth development and age appropriate teaching techniques that apply musical concepts and vocal technique to the repertoire, factoring multiple learning styles

    • Ability to sing and demonstrate music with solid vocal technique

    • Broad knowledge of diverse musical genres and styles

    • Strong classroom and rehearsal management skills

    • Strong interpersonal and collaborative approach to work effectively with students, parents and staff.

    Desirable:

    • Knowledge of and experience teaching Kodaly are preferred

    • Piano proficiency / keyboard skills

    • A network of area music educators and arts institutions to aid in recruitment and external relationships.

    • Comfort with, or willingness to learn Google Suite, Chorus Connection, and Weebly platforms for staff communication and accessing student work

    COMPENSATION:

    The hourly rate of this position is $80 per hour based on experience.
