  • TITLE: Choral Director (Part-time, non-exempt)

    JOB SUMMARY AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The Children’s Chorus of Washington (CCW) is seeking a dynamic and engaging Choral Director to lead two ensembles at our Northwest (NW) and Southwest (SW) D.C. locations for the 2025-2026 season, beginning in late August and ending in early June. The intermediate-level ensemble meets once per week on Sundays in NW, with singers in grades 6-7, while the elementary ensemble meets on Tuesdays in NW and Wednesdays in SW, with singers in grades 3-4. Applicants may apply for the full Sunday–Wednesday schedule, for Sunday only, or for Tuesday/Wednesday only (preference will be given to applicants who are available to teach both Tuesday and Wednesday sections; however, applications for a single section may also be considered). The Director will plan and lead weekly rehearsals, teach healthy vocal technique and one or more sections of CCW’s music theory curriculum, and prepare singers for performances and ensemble advancement. CCW prioritizes student and family relationships, and this Director must foster a positive, inclusive ensemble culture and maintain strong communication with families. Other responsibilities include selecting developmentally appropriate, diverse repertoire and collaborating with the Artistic Director, accompanists, and staff to ensure a cohesive and enriching musical experience. 

    OVERVIEW:

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Lead weekly rehearsals and music theory classes using effective and inspiring teaching methods.

    • Collaborate with the ensemble pianist to deliver well-planned, cohesive instruction.

    • Select diverse, age-appropriate repertoire that supports vocal development and musical growth.

    • Prepare choristers for performances and promotion to the next ensemble level.

    • Upload rehearsal recordings and assignments to the Music Portal.

    • Work with the Artistic Director and staff to plan performances and integrate the ensemble into larger organizational programming.

    • Provide mid-year and year-end evaluations for choristers.

    • Serve as a public representative and advocate for the ensemble.

    • Foster a positive, inclusive ensemble culture and maintain strong relationships with singers and families.

    • Communicate regularly with the Artistic Director and staff regarding rehearsal needs and student concerns.

    • Attend monthly staff meetings, auditions, and promotion assessments as needed.


    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree (minimum); Master's degree or higher (preferred); or comparable educational or professional experience in music - experience in Kodaly, solfege, and comfortable with singing, piano, and solfege.

    • Minimum of three years experience working with young musicians (Ages 8-13)

    • Availability to participate in chorus rehearsals, classes, performances, and special events (intensives, tech rehearsals, etc)

    • Passion for music education and a commitment to nurturing the artistic growth and development of children.

    • Knowledge of vocal pedagogy, child development and age appropriate teaching techniques that apply musical concepts and vocal technique to the repertoire,factoring multiple learning styles

    • Ability to sing and demonstrate music in a straight head tone

    • Knowledge of and experience teaching Kodaly are preferred

    • Piano proficiency / keyboard skills

    • Broad knowledge of diverse musical genres and styles

    • Strong classroom and rehearsal management skills

    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with students, parents and staff.

    • Comfort with, or willingness to learn Google Suite, Chorus Connection, and Weebly platforms for staff communication and accessing student work

    • Collaborative and inclusive approach to artistic creation and problem solving, and desire to be an effective team member

    COMPENSATION:

    The hourly rate of this position is $80 per hour based on experience.

    Both the Prep Class and Training Ensemble are un-auditioned, with a focus on developing head tone and pitch matching. The Director will plan and lead weekly lessons, teach healthy vocal technique and choral skills, prepare singers for performances and ensemble advancement. The Director will also complete a feedback form for each student at the end of each semester. CCW prioritizes student and family relationships, and this Director must foster a positive, inclusive ensemble culture and maintain strong communication with families. Other responsibilities include selecting developmentally appropriate, diverse repertoire and collaborating with the Artistic Director, accompanists, and staff to ensure a cohesive and enriching musical experience.     PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Attend all ensemble rehearsals and classes

    • Support the conductor in the leadership of Prep classes, cultivating a positive and joyful learning environment, and ensuring the safety of the singers

    • Provide classroom support for Treble Ensemble theory teacher

    • Assist with arrival and dismissal procedures for Prep and Treble Ensemble singers.


    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor's degree (minimum); Master's degree or higher (preferred); or comparable educational or professional experience in music - experience in Kodaly, solfege, and comfortable with singing, piano, and solfege.

    • Availability to participate in chorus rehearsals, classes, performances, and special events (intensives, tech rehearsals, etc)

    • Experience working with young children (grades K–3) in a music, educational, or camp setting

    • Basic knowledge of vocal pedagogy and healthy singing techniques appropriate for young voices

    • Piano proficiency to accompany simple songs and octavos 

    • Familiarity with foundational music concepts (pitch matching, rhythm, head tone, etc.)

    • Comfort leading songs, games, or warm-ups in a classroom or rehearsal setting

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, especially with children and families

    • Ability to collaborate effectively with a lead teacher or director

    • Dependability, punctuality, and strong organizational skills

    • Interest in inclusive, student-centered teaching and culturally responsive pedagogy

    • Availability for weekly classes from late August through early June

    • Willingness to complete semester-end feedback forms for students (with support from the Director)

    Preferred but not required:

    • Experience in choral singing or music education

    • Ability to read music and follow a choral score

    • Availability to teach additional music theory classes (optional)

  • TITLE: Program Assistant

    REPORTS TO: Chief Program Officer

    HOURS: Multiple weekly times available during active educational calendar (September - May):

    • Sundays at St. Columba’s Church (4201 Albemarle St NW) - 12:45PM - 7:45PM

    • Tuesdays at St. Columba’s Church (4201 Albemarle St NW) - 4:15PM - 9:15PM

    • Wednesdays at St. Matthew Lutheran Church (222 M Street SW) - 3:00PM - 7:15PM

    • Thursday at St. Columba’s Church (4201 Albemarle St NW) - 4:30PM - 7:00PM

    On occasion there will be additional CCW events including self produced performances, private bookings, retreats, auditions and tours.

    Interested candidates should indicate how many of these weekly sessions they are available for. We are open to candidates who can only accommodate 1 or 2 days per week, but welcome applicants who are available for 3 or 4.

    The successful candidates will be responsible for the following duties:

    • Implement and maintain the rehearsal procedure as laid out by the Chief Program Officer, including:

      • Arriving at rehearsal site 40 minutes in advance of the rehearsal start time

      • Monitoring the rehearsal phone for last minute updates from families.

      • Setting up rehearsal space, including chairs, technology and check in desk

      • Greeting singers, take attendance, distribute materials, and answer questions from parents

      • Ensuring the safety and comfort of singers during rehearsal time and the smooth execution of rehearsal

      • Checking singers out of sessions and ensuring safe return to families.

      • Tidying up rehearsal spaces and packing all resources back into storage

    • Act as an ambassador for CCW, providing an excellent level of customer service to parents as the frontline public facing staff member.

    • Act as the primary point of contact with venue staff, communicating any emerging needs, and referring to the Chief Program Officer as necessary.

    • Communicate a weekly report to the Chief Program Officer about the outcomes of the rehearsal, including student absences, behaviors, and adjustments required to rehearsal procedure.

    • Assist students and staff as needed during rehearsals and self-produced concerts, helping to ensure an organized and purposeful classroom environment.

    • Capture and catalog marketing content from rehearsals and performances for social media.

    • Collect materials from singers at the end of each semester.

    • Cultivate a warm and caring relationship with young people, that contributes to a culture of inclusivity.

    JOB SUMMARY AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The Rehearsal Assistant is the first point of contact for participating singers and their parents. They will be a key relationship builder, and connection between staff and singers. The Rehearsal Assistant will provide on-site support before, during, and after rehearsals, retreats, and self-produced concerts. This role will report to the Chief Program Officer, and has responsibility for reporting rehearsal updates to the Chief Program Officer, communicating about processes that need to be altered, and any feedback from parents and singers.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • 1-2 years of experience working with young people to create a safe and nurturing environment, ideally in an arts setting.

    • A welcoming and positive attitude with an understanding of what it means to provide excellent customer service.

    • Punctual and dependable, with the ability to remain calm under pressure.

    • Natural communication and interpersonal skills, both with children and adults

    • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

    • Ability to lift c. 25 lbs.

    • Passion for the arts and a commitment to CCW's mission.

    COMPENSATION

    This role is offered on an hourly basis at a rate of $20/hour.
