CCW Performs at the Chinese Embassy Spring Gala
The Children’s Chorus of Washington was honored to be invited by the Chinese Embassy to represent U.S. youth at its spring gala celebrating American student exchanges with China. The event highlights a five-year initiative to bring 50,000 American students to China; now in year two, more than 25,000 students have already participated. Ambassador Xie Feng emphasized that the future of U.S.–China relations lies in strengthening bonds between people through meaningful cultural exchange.
Our choristers performed United in Purpose by Rollo Dilworth, featuring Maya Angelou’s words, “the onus is upon us all to improve the human condition,” followed by the popular Chinese song The World Gave Me, sung in Mandarin. With support from students Abe, Izzy, and Sophia on pronunciation, the performance was warmly received by the Ambassador and more than 500 guests.
Beyond the performance, our singers gained meaningful cultural exposure, confidence singing in another language, and the experience of serving as artistic ambassadors. The evening strengthened relationships with embassy leadership and opened the door to potential future collaboration, including educational exchange and the possibility of a CCW tour to China.
